Weekly Devotional - Deuteronomy 32:44

"And Moses came and spoke all the words of this song into the ears of the people he and Hoshea the son of Nun."—Deuteronomy 32:44

I once heard a musician describe the difference between good music and great music. She said that good music has the power to bring you to places that you have been. It can bring you back to childhood moments, to experiences with your family, to sad events etc.

What is great music? Great music has the power to bring you to places that you have never been. To dream of what is possible in your life.

Music has a special power to enter the heart. Perhaps the reason that our reading comes at the end of the Torah is it because God wants His message to enter our hearts so that we apply it to our everyday lives.

Most of the parshah of Haazinu is a song. Moses sung this song to the Jewish people on the day he passed away, singing to them about their experiences together, rebuking them for the things they’d done wrong, and reminding them that even though God gets very angry at their sins, He will always come back to His people.

Here are a few lessons that we can learn from the comparison of the Torah to music.

  •  When people argue they express opposing points of view. When it comes to music though, different notes can create a beautiful harmony. Torah has room for differing voices.

  • Music connects us to the Torah in a deeply emotional way. Our study should not remain an intellectual exercise. We must connect to word of God emotionally and develop a loving relationship with Torah.

  • Music helps us remember the lyrics of a song. The lyrics of the song of the Torah must be remembered in order for it to meaningfully become a part of our lives.

  • Music is an expression of mathematical principles. Music brings great emotion, but it must not stand alone—it should be a reflection of the Torah and be created as a way of expressing Torah concepts in an emotional way.
